A day in the life of a groom

The day starts off like any other, I begin by unlocking the door and am greeted by sixteen hungry horses patiently waiting for their morning feeds. I give each horse their individual feeds and supplements along with a pile of haylage each to get them ready for the day ahead.

After morning feeds, I unbandage any horses that needed them on last night, and then it’s time to muck out. The trailer is then reversed into the barn and all of the stables get a thorough clean out and fresh bedding if needs be. Then the exercising begins. I start by tacking up any of the horses that are being ridden today. They get a full body brush along with their mane and tails and also get their feet picked out and oiled, then they get tacked up and stand waiting to be ridden.

When all of the horses are back in their stables, I begin to lunge any of them that weren’t ridden. After lunging comes the hand walking for the few that are in light work and don’t need much exercise.

Once all of the horses are exercised it’s nearing lunch time. I fill up the wheelbarrows once again for their lunch hay, when that is done the barn gets swept and the tack room gets cleaned out and tidied and I leave for lunch.

When I get back from lunch I start by tidying everything. Any tack that was used throughout the day gets cleaned and neatly put away in their respective places. Once it hits four o’clock the stables all get skipped out once again and by then, the hungry hippos are ready to be fed again. When the feeding is done for the second time today, the barn gets swept again and any horses that need it, get bandaged for the night.

Finally, once everything is finished and the stall doors are double checked, I say goodnight to all the horses and pull across the main door so that It can be locked, and following this the smaller door is locked and that is the daily routine of a groom.
