Bronwyn Muckenschnabel & Harvey wins at the AIRC Riding Club Festival

We’re a bit late with some of the articles coming out today and tomorrow just because of the week that was in it. But we have some cracking community articles coming out from grassroots equestrians competing across the last week. So let’s kick it off with Bronwyn and Harvey.

Bronwyn was drawn to showing primarily due to Harvey’s potential as identified by her friends and coaches. Their journey in the show ring began at the 2023 AIRC Festival, where they won their showing class and went on to become Reserve Supreme Champion. This year, they placed second in a strong Lightweight Hunter class. “When the ring steward called myself and Harvey into 2nd place in the line-up, my jaw dropped, and genuinely, I could have cried because the competition was strong, and I was so unbelievably proud of Harvey,” Bronwyn recalls with emotion.

Bronwyn finds the most rewarding aspect of showing to be witnessing the progress and development she and Harvey have achieved together. “I always leave the ring with a smile, as he makes me so proud,” she says.

Over the past four years, through lots of hard work and patience, Bronwyn has developed Harvey into a remarkable all-rounder. “Myself and Harvey began competing properly last year, and have had great success across all disciplines; showing, dressage, showjumping, performance hunter etc. He is a real all-rounder, placing most times we compete,” Bronwyn shares.

Preparation for Success

On competition days, Bronwyn’s planning helps put forward a smooth and stress-free experience. By getting up early and pre-planning every detail, she minimises any potential stress for herself and Harvey. Her preparation paid off at the AIRC Riding Club Festival, where their impressive performance earned them a second-place finish in the Lightweight Hunter class.

Bronwyn ensures that training remains a positive experience for both her and Harvey by maintaining a varied and consistent schedule. This includes hacking, flatwork, and jumping lessons, which not only keep the training interesting but also help clear their minds. “I always want to make sure he has time to process the questions I ask of him during times of intense training,” Bronwyn explains.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many riders in the equestrian community, Bronwyn has faced her share of challenges, particularly with rider confidence following a fall earlier in the year. To rebuild her confidence, she returned to basics and focused on small jumps, gradually working her way back up. She also enlisted a friend to school Harvey over bigger fences, ensuring that her anxiety did not impact Harvey’s performance. “His biggest and best piece of advice that he always says to me before jumping is to ‘smile, breathe, and enjoy it’, and to ‘take the pressure off myself’,” she recalls.

Lessons Learned and Future Aspirations

The experience has taught Bronwyn to believe in herself and trust the progress she has made with Harvey. Looking ahead, she is excited about their future in the showing ring and hopes to start eventing next year. “We hope to start eventing next year, and we are aiming to progress in the showing ring, and maybe eventually make it to Dublin!” she shares enthusiastically.

For Bronwyn, the most rewarding part of her journey with Harvey has been watching him grow, develop, and come into his own. “Taking home rosettes makes it all worthwhile,” she says. She also shares a common misconception about showing that it is not solely about a horse’s physical appearance but also about the partnership between horse and rider.

Advice for Aspiring Show Riders

Bronwyn advises aspiring show riders to focus on flatwork and to make sure their horses are comfortable with other riders. “A good gallop, with nice extension and forward stretch, is really striking, and most judges love to see it,” she notes. Additionally, she emphasises the importance of building a connection with the horse, making sure that they are confident and comfortable in various situations.

A Message to the Equestrian Community

Bronwyn’s message to the equestrian community is one to take note of. “Don’t give up, keep trying, even when things don’t go to plan, push through it, take your time, don’t rush yourself or your horse, and you will reap the rewards.”
