Cherie McHugh’s name is well-known in the world of horse showing. Despite her late start in the discipline, her passion and dedication have propelled her to great heights. We had the opportunity to speak with Cherie about her journey, her horses, and her advice for aspiring riders.
A Late Start in Showing
Cherie’s journey in the equestrian world began early in life, but it wasn’t until 2016 that she ventured into showing. “We have been involved in horses all our life. Although I was late to the showing world, I didn’t start showing until 2016. Beforehand, my sister and I did showjumping and working hunter,” she shared. This late start didn’t hinder her success; instead, it fueled her determination to excel in her new discipline.
Meet the Horses: Dowhills Beau Soliel and Captain Moonlight
Cherie’s success can be attributed to her exceptional horses, Dowhills Beau Soliel and Captain Moonlight. “Dowhills Beau Soliel has been amazing for me. She’s the easiest and safest show pony on earth. She’s given me wins in the show ring that I couldn’t imagine,” Cherie said. Captain Moonlight, a pony rescued by her sister in 2021, has also become a significant part of her team. “My sister has produced him to be the pony he is today,” she added.
Preparation for Balmoral Show
Preparation for a significant competition like the Balmoral Show is unique for Cherie and her team. “We prepare somehow different than others. We don’t do a lot of schoolwork. We try to keep the horses doing different things each day like hacking, fieldwork, beach rides, etc. We do some training shows and get them used to the atmosphere whilst taking it slow to ensure they are all matured mentally as well as physically,” Cherie explained. This varied approach keeps her horses engaged and ready for the big event.
Focusing on Showing
While Cherie has experience in multiple disciplines, her main focus is now showing. “My main discipline now is showing. It’s my passion, and I would never change it. My sister Chloe dabbles in both showing and working hunter,” she stated. This focus has allowed her to hone her skills and achieve remarkable success in the show ring.
Maintaining Passion and Motivation
Cherie’s passion for riding is fueled by her close-knit team of friends. “I keep positive with my small team of close friends. We empower each other and encourage each other to do better. Without the team, I would struggle,” she said. This support system plays a crucial role in her continued success and motivation.
Managing Nerves at Competitions
Like many riders, Cherie experiences nerves during competitions, particularly regarding her ponies’ performance. “Most of my nerves come from actually worrying about how the ponies will place, so I try to stay focused on ‘what will be will be,’” she shared. This mindset helps her stay calm and focused during high-stakes events.
Advice for Aspiring Riders
For younger riders looking to have a long and successful career, Cherie’s advice is simple: “Surround yourself with people who are truly happy for you and empower you to do better. Not every day will be a winning day, but it will be a learning day for the next day out,” she advised. This perspective emphasizes the importance of a supportive community and continuous learning.
Common Misconceptions About Showing
Cherie addressed a common misconception about showing: “Probably that showing is boring and you just go round in circles. When it’s done properly, it’s very exciting,” she said. Her enthusiasm for the sport is evident and contagious.
Valuable Advice from Mentors
The most valuable piece of advice Cherie received from a coach or mentor came from her mother: “A pony doesn’t know what it’s worth. In this game, people think you need the best of the best to succeed, or you’re not capable of winning if you haven’t got a 30k pony. When really, all you need is the right knowledge and love for the animal,” she recounted. This wisdom has guided her throughout her career.
Biggest Inspirations and Support
Cherie’s biggest support in her riding career has been her parents and her team. “Without them, nothing would be possible,” she said. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in her success.
Future Goals and Aspirations
Looking ahead, Cherie has ambitious goals for the year. “I would love to qualify both the lead rein and my sister’s Hunter for HOYS, but I think that’s everyone’s dream. The goal will be to receive good results across the water whilst making memories,” she shared. Her aspirations reflect her dedication and drive to continue achieving new milestones.
