Ciara Mullen’s path to success at the Dublin Horse Show this year was marked by a clear plan and a strong bond with her horse, Bart. “We aimed for Dublin from the start of the season,” Ciara explains. “Bart arrived in November, and after just a few shows, we knew we had something special. It was a focused journey with Dublin as our goal.”
Bart, a 13-year-old gelding owned by Vicky and Angela Smith, quickly became a key part of Ciara’s team. “Bart isn’t just a talented horse; he genuinely has the biggest heart,” Ciara says. “When I worked with him before, I was amazed by him. Now that he’s with me, he’s just part of the family. He’s so intelligent and full of personality—it’s like he’s running the show.”
Winning at Dublin is a significant achievement, and for Ciara, it’s a reflection of the collective effort. “This win isn’t just mine,” she asserts. “It’s for everyone who’s helped us get here—my parents, my partner Lee, and our whole team. It’s a year-round effort with support from vets, physios, farriers, and friends.”
The experience of competing at Dublin brings a unique set of emotions. “I focus on feeling the ride rather than getting caught up in nerves,” Ciara notes. “You have to stay in tune with your horse and trust the preparation.”
Looking back, Ciara describes the experience as still feeling surreal. “It’s hard to believe it even now when I see the photos and videos,” she admits. “It’s a reminder of how special this victory is.”
Ciara credits her support team for their crucial role in this success. “Jane Davies and Nicole Groyer from the Connolly’s Redmills team, along with our farrier Mikey Rafter, have been vital,” she says. “Mark Ruddock keeps my riding on track, and the breeders are key to everything. It’s a combined effort.”
Preparation for Dublin involves a rigorous routine. “We keep the horses fit and happy with varied work,” Ciara explains. “For me it is always about getting the basics right, that is crucial. It’s about solid groundwork and letting everything come together.”
The Dublin Horse Show stands out for its atmosphere. “Nothing compares to the buzz of Dublin,” Ciara says. “The crowds, the excitement—it’s an experience like no other. It’s the pinnacle of our year.”
For those aiming to compete at Dublin, Ciara offers practical advice. “Start small and build up,” she suggests. “Make a plan, learn from every show, and focus on turnout. A good trainer is essential, and remember to enjoy the journey.”
Maintaining peak condition for both horse and rider is key. “We ensure our horses get plenty of turnout and tailor their feed and exercise routines,” Ciara explains. “As for me, I’m working on taking better care of myself too.”
Ciara gives special thanks to those who’ve supported her. “My mum and boyfriend Lee have been incredible,” she says. “Vicky Smith and Angela have been a huge part of my journey, believing in me and Bart.”
Competing at Dublin is deeply meaningful. “It’s an honour to be part of it,” Ciara reflects. “There really is no show like it, it’s the pinnacle of our year and we would be extremely lost without it. I grew up watching my Mum and Dad show there and my family come in to watch and support us every year it’s a really special event”.
Looking ahead, Ciara plans to continue with Bart. “We’ll take a bit of a break and then focus on the next season,” she says. “Qualifying Bart for the Ladies’ class at HOYS is the next goal, but I’ll enjoy every moment with him regardless of the outcome.”
