The equestrian world is once again under scrutiny after a jockey hit the headlines for apparently pushing his horse too far, resulting in the horses untimely death – shockwaves are headed through both the equestrian and non-equestrian world and yet again – those who use animals for sport and even hobbies, are facing the same tarring as those who do not represent the majority of us in animal related sports. For this article, I write from personal experience as both a horse and dog owner who enjoys partaking in showing classes.
For many, the relationship with their pets goes far beyond just feeding and playing with them. It’s about connection, mutual enjoyment, and shared experiences that deepen the emotional bond between owner and animal. One of the ways some pet owners foster this bond is by involving their animals in sports. Whether it’s in the showring, agility courses, flyball, dog sledding, or a range of equestrian sports, engaging in sports with animals provides an opportunity to spend time together in a way that is both stimulating and fun.
The Joy of Shared Activities
One of the primary reasons people choose to involve their animals in sports is the joy of sharing an activity that challenges both human and animal alike. It’s not just about the physical exercise—though that’s certainly an important benefit. It’s about creating a space where both the animal and the human can interact in a meaningful way, pushing each other to grow while also enjoying the process.
For animals, particularly dogs, who savour every second spent with their owner, involving them in a sport alongside you not only enables more time to be spent together in interesting ways but can also create an outlet for their energy. Many pets, especially high-energy breeds, thrive when they have a purpose or task to complete. Engaging in a sport gives them that structure and stimulation, helping to prevent boredom and frustration, which can lead to behavioral issues.
On the human side, these activities also provide an opportunity to create lasting memories with their animals. Instead of merely walking the dog or lounging with a pet, sports activities turn routine moments into unique experiences, allowing for more quality time together. It’s a chance to bond through teamwork, a shared goal, and the joy of seeing the animal succeed. For many, this is deeply fulfilling and rewarding. For me, I love nothing more than seeing my dogs excitement watching me load up the car with our gear and heading to a show where we spend the whole day or weekend together constantly – I love watching her little face look up at me when trotting around the ring and nothing can compare to that feeling of when she places – her little tag wagging, because she knows she’s done herself proud. Likewise, loading the ponies in the box – watching them on the trailer cam and spending the day at a show offers us all something different – It’s a break from the yard for them and it allows us to continue or work as rescue pony ambassadors.
Variety and Enrichment for Animals
Animals, like humans, can get bored with repetitive routines. While dogs and other pets generally enjoy daily walks and playtime, introducing variety into their lives through sports can have profound benefits. Just as a person may need a change of pace or a new challenge, animals also require mental and physical stimulation to keep them engaged and healthy.
By diversifying the way we interact with our pets, we also prevent the monotony of repetitive tasks. For animals that thrive on excitement and novelty, sports provide a dynamic and enriching environment. It’s a creative way for humans to think outside the box when it comes to animal care, ensuring that the pets are not just physically exercised but mentally stimulated as well.
Strengthening the Bond Through Collaboration
When pets and owners engage in sports, the experience often leads to a stronger bond. The cooperation required for success in activities like obedience trials, showjumping courses, or even synchronized tricks creates a unique connection. The pet learns to trust the owner, responding to cues and commands, while the owner builds a deeper understanding of their pet’s abilities, strengths, and limitations.
This relationship is about more than just the end goal of winning a competition or completing an activity. It’s about the process—the quiet moments where the pet looks to the owner for guidance, the shared victories when a task is completed, and even the learning moments when both pet and human stumble, only to rise again.
In essence, these shared activities transform a pet-owner relationship into a dynamic partnership. The owner takes on the role of coach, guide, and motivator, while the pet becomes the willing participant, demonstrating loyalty, intelligence, and love in return. The deepening connection becomes one of mutual respect and enjoyment.
The Harm of Negative Stories in Animal Sports
Despite the many benefits, the world of animal sports is not without its negative stories. Media outlets often highlight cases of abuse or neglect in these sports, which can cast a long shadow over the positive experiences of responsible participants. This creates a dilemma for those who cherish the idea of spending meaningful time with their animals through sports: the fear that such negative stories might overshadow the genuine love and care that motivates so many.
The idea that some people exploit animals for competitive gain—pushing them beyond their physical limits or forcing them into situations that cause distress—saddens and bothers many who take part in animal sports with the intention of enhancing their pet’s quality of life. The key difference lies in the intent: for responsible pet owners, animal sports are about providing enrichment, mental stimulation, and fun. They are about celebrating the unique bond between human and animal, and creating a space for mutual growth.
When negative stories about abuse arise, it’s important to remember that they reflect the actions of a small minority and do not define the overall sport. However, these stories do highlight the need for education, awareness, and vigilance in animal sports. They remind us that the welfare of the animal should always come first, and that the love and respect we have for our pets must guide every activity, including sports.
The Emotional Toll of Negative Perceptions
For those of us who participate in animal sports with the best intentions, it can be disheartening to see these negative stories receive so much attention. It’s not just a question of defending the sport—it’s about protecting the reputation of those who genuinely care for their pets and view them as partners in these activities, not as tools or commodities.
Moreover, such stories often fuel misconceptions about the motives behind these activities, leaving responsible pet owners to battle a stigma that doesn’t reflect their true approach. It becomes a challenge to ensure that the positive, enriching aspects of animal sports aren’t overshadowed by the actions of a few irresponsible individuals.
Celebrating the Positive Impact of Animal Sports
Engaging in sports with animals is more than just a trend—it’s a meaningful way to enhance the relationship between humans and their pets. It provides an avenue for shared joy, mental and physical stimulation, and a stronger emotional connection. By participating in sports, owners are not only enriching their pets’ lives but are also bringing creativity, variety, and fulfillment into their own lives. It is also a wonderful way for children to spend healthy time away from the AI’s and IT’s of today – getting them out in the fresh air, encouraging them to care for another being and offering a level of responsibility and care.
While negative stories about abuse or neglect in animal sports are concerning, they should not overshadow the countless examples of love, trust, and collaboration that define the majority of participants. For those who choose to engage in these activities responsibly, animal sports are a powerful way to strengthen bonds and create lasting memories that benefit both animal and human alike.
In ANY sport involving an animal – the important thing to remember is always – love the animal first – and the sport second.
