Sophie Cusack’s Journey at Balmoral Show

Introduction

Sophie Cusack, a 14-year-old rider from Adare, Co Limerick, has quickly made a name for herself in the showing world. Despite her recent start, her dedication and passion have led to impressive results. We had the chance to speak with Sophie about her background, her horse, and her experiences at competitions like the Balmoral Show.

A Budding Talent in Showing

Sophie Cusack began her showing journey only last year after attending a clinic with Jodie Moran in Askeaton. “My name is Sophie Cusack, I am 14 years old and live in Adare, Co Limerick. I only started showing last year after I brought my pony to a clinic with Jodie Moran in Askeaton,” she shared. This introduction to showing opened up a new world for Sophie, one she has embraced with enthusiasm and determination.

Meet Dunguaire Mick (Kinvara)

Sophie’s equine partner is Dunguaire Mick, affectionately known as Kinvara. “My pony’s name is Dunguaire Mick, his stable name is Kinvara, and he is 11 years old. He is a Connemara pony and has the most amazing temperament, always tries his best for me,” Sophie explained. Kinvara’s versatility and willingness make him an ideal companion for Sophie’s competitive endeavours.

Preparation for Balmoral Show

Preparing for a major show like Balmoral involves meticulous care and attention. “Balmoral was only our second big show, so I suppose I treated it like any other show, to be honest. I like to make sure that Kinvara has plenty of rest, feed, and turnout before a show so that he is in good condition both mentally and physically,” Sophie said. This routine ensures that both she and Kinvara are at their best when it matters most.

Versatility in Disciplines

Kinvara is not just a show pony; he excels in multiple disciplines. “Kinvara is a real all-rounder, and we do a variety of disciplines. We hunted for the winter, did dressage, some show jumping, and we also do eventing. Last year, we did Hunter Trials, and we qualified for the National Pony Club Combined Training Championships in Barnadown. We also did Tetrathlon,” Sophie recounted. This diverse experience has contributed to their strong partnership.

Balancing Schoolwork and Training

Balancing academic responsibilities with training is a challenge Sophie handles with dedication. “I try to keep on top of my schoolwork during the week and spend most of the weekend with my ponies,” she shared. This disciplined approach allows her to excel both in her studies and in the saddle.

Managing Nerves at Competitions

Staying calm under pressure is key to Sophie’s success. “I try not to think of it as a big deal. Once I stay calm, so does Kinvara,” she explained. This mutual calmness between horse and rider helps them perform well in high-stress environments.

Advice for Aspiring Riders

For other young riders aiming to compete at prestigious shows, Sophie’s advice is straightforward: “Focus on your flatwork. It is the key to everything,” she emphasised. Mastering the basics of flatwork lays a strong foundation for success in various disciplines.

What She Loves About Balmoral Show

The unique atmosphere of the Balmoral Show is one of Sophie’s favourite aspects. “I love the atmosphere there and competing at such a high level,” she said. The excitement and energy of the event drive her passion for competition.
