The Grassroots Community Series – Meet Ger McNulty

Ger McNulty: Reigniting Passion and Pursuing Excellence in Dressage

After a hiatus of thirteen years, Irish dressage rider and coach Ger McNulty made a striking return to the competitive dressage scene in May 2023. His comeback not only made headlines in the Irish Field paper but also marked the beginning of a year filled with success and new ambitions. With a history rich in achievements and a future that promises even more, McNulty is a testament to the enduring spirit of equestrian sports.

A Fresh Start with Dionysus II

In November 2023, McNulty embarked on a new chapter by purchasing Dionysus II, a 10-year-old British Warmblood. This partnership is not just about continuing a career but reigniting a passion with significant goals set for 2024. One of the most exciting objectives is to make the Irish Nations team and represent Ireland in the UK towards the end of August into September as a senior rider. “Myself and Dionysus will campaign as much as we can this year to reach that goal,” McNulty explains. Starting at Medium level—a new level for Dionysus—they plan to climb the ranks swiftly, showcasing the potential that has been gestating during McNulty’s time away from competitive riding.

Expanding the Team

The acquisition of Dionysus II is just the beginning. McNulty eagerly anticipates the arrival of a string of talented dressage horses, including Dionysus’ full sister, currently at PSG level. This expansion of his equine team underscores his commitment to not just compete but dominate in dressage with a diverse and capable group of horses.

Supported by prominent sponsors like Showtime Equestrian, The Ultimate Dressage Experience, and All Seasons Equestrian, McNulty is not alone in his journey. The backing of such brands, along with the guidance of his trainer, Sandra Blake Farrell—an international rider now based in Switzerland—ensures a robust support system. This support extends to innovative coaching methods, including online and in-person sessions, which help McNulty stay at the peak of his performance.

A Legacy of Excellence

McNulty’s journey into dressage began when he was just 14, under the tutelage of Sandra Blake Farrell, who has been instrumental in shaping his riding career. His early days were marked by success, securing Junior Champion status and National Champion titles. Today, his goals are as ambitious as ever, if not more so. “Now that I am back, my aims are just as high, if not higher,” he asserts with a reflective passion for his sport.

Why the Grassroots Community Series?

The Grassroots Gazette has captured significant attention within the equestrian community, providing valuable information, training, and support to riders, grooms, and owners alike. McNulty’s desire to join the Grassroots Community Series stems from a genuine love for the animals and a commitment to the community that supports them. “I am all for the animals, and if I could help and show the love I have for my animals and the animals I am involved with, I think many people would also benefit,” he explains.

His approach to training and handling horses offers a unique perspective that could greatly benefit the Grassroots Community Series. As McNulty navigates the limits of his capacity to take on new clients, his participation in the series could serve as a vital platform to share his knowledge and experience, enriching the equestrian community further.

Looking Ahead

As Ger McNulty looks to the future, his story is not just about personal goals but about contributing to a larger narrative within the equine industry. His return to dressage is a beacon for those who have stepped away from their passions, demonstrating that it’s never too late to reignite old flames and chase new dreams.

With an unwavering dedication and a robust support network, McNulty is poised not only to achieve his personal objectives but also to inspire and elevate those around him through his involvement in initiatives like the Grassroots Community Series. As McNulty and his team of exceptional horses gear up for the 2024 season, the equestrian world watches with anticipation, eager to witness the fruits of a journey marked by perseverance, passion, and the pursuit of excellence.
