An interview with Irish Stable Staff Award Winner Sinead O’Sullivan

We did this interview before the Godolphin’s Irish Stable Staff Awards were run. We are delighted to see that Sinead won the award. Love her answers throughout this interview and we can full see why Sinead was deserving of the Travelling Head Lass award.

Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself and your interests?

My name is Sinead O Sullivan and I am lucky to have been one of 8 people in Ireland this year to have been chosen for the Godolphin Irish Stable Staff Award’s. I’m traveling head lass for John Murphy in county Cork and on non-race days I organise everything that goes on, on the ground.

Can you tell us about the awards?

The Irish Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards celebrate what lies at the heart of our successful racing and breeding communities – dedicated employees and contractors working hard behind the scenes every day to bring the very best to the sport.

The Godolphin-sponsored awards will go to exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry and to the Irish racecourse which is judged to have the best facilities for stable employees.

Formerly known as the Irish Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards, the award ceremony will take place in the Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge, County Kildare on Tuesday October 25 where the flagship award – The Irish Racing Excellence Award will be announced and presented to one of the Irish Thoroughbred Industry Employee Award winners.

How did you become a traveling head groom?

For years I worked in mainly jump yards and the opportunity came up to start traveling with horse’s to race’s. It was a  big change working with jump horse’s to flat horse’s but I’ve never looked back.

How did you start in racing?

I started off in racing at the age of 13,working part time, before and after school in a local riding stables, the bug got me and that was the end of school or any other career 😋

What do you love most about the racing world?

The things I love about racing are of course the horse’s, such beautiful intelligent animals and the people you get to meet,u will never be stuck for help, it’s like a little family.

What is your greatest racing achievement?

My greatest achievements were probably taking out a trainer’s license for a couple of years and training a couple of winner’s. It was a tough slog but I’m glad I had a crack at it.

Who is the yard’s favourite horse?

My favourite horse is a horse called Brazos, it’s a love-hate relationship. I love him, he hates me. 😋😋😅

What is the one race you would like to win?

The race I’d love to win is a group one, it would be very special to look after a horse that could reach that caliber.

What’s your greatest achievement in the racing industry?

My best result so far is being in a job I absolutely love and winning this award, very special.
