The 54th annual Eadestown Field Day, a cornerstone event in Kildare’s equestrian calendar, is set to take place on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Punchestown Racecourse. Known as Ireland’s most famous unaffiliated horse show, this event has evolved from its origins in 1968 at Doyle’s Field near Naas Racecourse into a well-established institution that draws families, riders, and equestrian enthusiasts from all over the country.
The brainchild of local equestrian icons Betty Fahey of Greenhills Riding School and Geri Sugars of Calliaghstown Equestrian Centre, the Eadestown Horse and Pony Show was designed as a community-focused event to showcase young equestrian talent from Kildare. Today, it continues to honor that vision by offering a broad range of competitions, from Lead Rein classes for the youngest riders to Working Hunters, Equitation Classes, and Showjumping. The ever-popular Fancy Dress competition adds a touch of fun and creativity, making it a highlight of the day.
This event is more than just a horse show; it is a key fundraising initiative for the Rathmore and Kilteel Parishes, entirely organised by local volunteers. Many of the founding families—Byrne, Finn, Lombard, Gillespie, and others—remain deeply involved, ensuring the seamless execution of the day’s activities, from course building to judging.
Local riding schools, including Calliaghstown, Castlewarden Pony and Country Club and Greenhills, have been instrumental in supporting the event since its inception, providing the necessary resources to ensure young riders and their ponies can participate. Competing at Eadestown is considered a rite of passage for many Kildare riders, with the event’s unique blend of traditional gymkhana and novel competitions setting it apart from other shows.
Beyond the equestrian events, the Field Day offers a full spectrum of country fete attractions, making it a true family day out. Visitors can explore an art exhibition featuring local artists, enjoy home-baked treats at the tea tent, and browse through the book stall, bric-a-brac, and country produce stands. A dog show adds to the day’s variety, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
With coveted trophies and prizes on the line, Eadestown Field Day promises to create lasting memories for participants and spectators alike. It’s a day where community spirit, tradition, and the love of equestrian sport come together, making it a must-attend event in the Irish countryside.
