Irish racing’s Great Matriarch passes away age 94

We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences during this time of loss. Maureen Mullins, the esteemed matriarch of the renowned Irish racing Mullins family, has passed away at the age of 94.

A figure of immense popularity within the horse racing world, our heartfelt condolences go out to her daughter Sandra, her sons Willie, Tony, George, and Tom, as well as her grandchildren and extended family members in this sorrowful time.

In 2016, Maureen Mullins was fittingly honored with the HRI’s Contribution to the Industry Award, a testament to her many years of dedication to racing. Her enthusiasm for attending races remained undiminished, joyfully participating in race meetings until recently.

As the cornerstone of a distinguished racing dynasty, Maureen Mullins’ presence will be profoundly missed at racecourses across the country. A woman of strength and independence, her absence will be felt keenly.

Married to the celebrated champion trainer Paddy Mullins, who passed away in 2010, Maureen was the mother to trainer Willie, Grade One-winning trainers Tony and Tom, esteemed horse transporter George, and daughter Sandra, each of whom has found success in racing.

Maureen herself was a victorious rider, famously winning aboard Razzo Forte in a women’s event at Gowran Park in 1982, a race in which her daughter also competed.

Her legacy extends through her grandchildren, including Patrick, a record-breaking amateur rider; Danny, a multiple Grade One winner; and David, who rode Rule The World to a 2016 Grand National victory. Grandsons Charlie and Emmet have both ridden winners, with Emmet training 2022 Aintree Grand National winner Noble Yeats, showcasing the family’s profound impact on National Hunt racing.

Danny Mullins honored her on X (formerly Twitter) as “such an inspiration. RIP.”

Her roles as an owner and breeder were marked with significant achievements, notably with Kilcruit winning the Grade One Punchestown bumper, a horse that first raced under her colors.

Our racing team reflected on Maureen’s passing, acknowledging her “incredible passion for the sport and the amazing legacy she leaves behind” and extending condolences to the Mullins family and the broader racing community. Maureen Mullins’ passionate contribution to racing has left an indelible mark, ensuring her legacy will endure for future generations.
