Avril Mackey’s influence in the equestrian community goes beyond just competition; she embodies the spirit of resilience and leadership. With her partners, Ebony, a 13-year-old cob x, and Blossom, a 16-year-old Connemara x, Avril has not only competed but has excelled, carving out a reputation as a formidable competitor and a respected judge.

At just over a decade into her journey with Ebony and several successful years with Blossom, Avril has consistently demonstrated what it means to compete with heart. “Winning the metre class at Omagh Show and earning placements in the Summer Tour were not just achievements, they were milestones that pushed us even further,” Avril proudly states. Notably, Avril and her team qualified for the metre final at Millstreet, marking a significant achievement in their competitive timeline.
Beyond her role as a competitor, Avril enhances the sport with her keen insight as a judge. “Judging across the country, from local shows to RDS qualifiers, has deepened my appreciation for our sport’s integrity and its challenges,” she explains. Her experience has enriched her perspective and her contributions to the sport.
Overcoming Challenges with Determination
2023 was a year of highs and lows for Avril and her horses. “We faced some tough breaks, especially with Ebony’s skin irritation, but we tackled each challenge head-on and ended the year stronger,” Avril reflects. Meanwhile, Blossom showcased her exceptional talent, securing wins and high placements across several notable competitions.
Ambitious Plans for the Future
Looking forward, Avril’s goals are clear and ambitious. “This season, we’re not just aiming to compete; we’re aiming to dominate at the amateur level and make our mark at Internationals like Hickstead and Millstreet,” she declares. Her calendar brims with potential, from local shows to the possibility of international competition.
“The plan is to start local but think big. We’re targeting the Balmoral Amateur Qualifiers first, then setting our sights on the Hickstead derby. It’s about pushing our limits,” says Avril. This strategy underscores her commitment to growth and excellence in the sport.
Building Community and Sharing the Journey
Avril is passionate about fostering a supportive equestrian community. She actively participates in the Grassroots Rider Academy series, connecting with fellow enthusiasts to share her journey—the victories and the challenges alike.
“Showing the real side of this sport—the great days and the tough ones—is essential. It’s all about balance, and I want to help others see that,” Avril notes. She is also eager to expand her influence by speaking on podcasts, sharing her unique perspective as both a judge and a competitor.

Avril’s commitment to continuous improvement is palpable. She regularly attends clinics and training sessions to enhance her skills. “Every competition, every clinic is a learning opportunity,” Avril observes. She plans to continue these efforts vigorously, aiming to not only better herself but also to bring fresh insights into her judging.
