Raheendaw Horse & Pony Show

Sunday 1st June – Raheendaw, Rathvilly, Co. Carlow

The Raheendaw Horse & Pony Show returns this weekend with a packed schedule, big qualifiers, and that trademark mix of local charm and serious competition. Now in its third year, the show is starting to find its rhythm—and the committee is confident this year’s event will be the best yet.

“We’re starting to get into a good system where competitors can rely on us to have the classes they want brought back year after year,” says Leah Burgess, one of the show’s core organisers and the voice behind this year’s feature.

With 12 qualifiers, a crowd-favourite dog show, and a full day of classes for every kind of competitor, this really is a show built by and for the equestrian community.

Early Start, Big Day Ahead

Gates open at 7:30am, with the Working Hunter Ponies in Ring 5 kicking off at 9:30am and all other rings starting from 10am. The show will take place at Raheendaw, Rathvilly, Co. Carlow (R93 NX64), with everything laid out to be spectator-friendly and easy to navigate.

Whether you’re competing or just watching, the advice is simple:
“Come early! Get your numbers, find your ring, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Qualifier Highlights: Treo Eile & Red Mills Champion of Champions

This year’s show hosts some key qualifiers:

  • Treo Eile Showing Pathway Series: “It’s a great incentive,” says Leah. The top two combinations on the day will go through to the final at the Iverk Show in August—a brilliant stage for retrained racehorses now making their mark as riding horses.
  • Connolly’s Red Mills Champion of Champions: Always a popular series, this one sees the champion and reserve champion hunters, along with the highest placed 4-year-old, advance to the final at the Wicklow Summer Show in Barnadown.

“It’s a great example of showing for spectators,” she adds—and entries are expected to be strong.

Classes With Craic, Rivalry & Real Skill

One ring that always delivers?
“Ring 2 Riding Horses is always a hive of activity from early morning until the end of the show!”

There’s also a special local edge with a trophy awarded in the Amateur Working Hunter class to the highest-placed Carlow-based competitor.

The Working Hunter and Handy Hunter classes are crowd favourites for good reason:

“The Handy Hunter is great for new horse and rider combinations, younger ponies, or a nice way to finish if your class didn’t go your way.” It’s casual, fun, and enter-on-the-day at the pocket.

And of course, there’s the real crowd pleaser:
“Fancy Dress—I don’t know how they do it!”

Horses, Dogs & The Heart of the Show

The show isn’t just about serious competition—it’s about community.

“We pride ourselves on being a ‘local’ show, but we love to see the professional riders and producers return year on year.”

The Dog Show, launched last year, was a surprise hit and is now back bigger than ever.
Expect everything from Best Working Dog to Best Dog Handled by a Child Under 12, and even a Gain Dog All Ireland Championship Qualifier, with the final in Clonaslee Show this September.

“Come Horses, Come Dogs!” sums up the spirit perfectly.

Local Business, Big Backing – Sponsors Who Make It Possible

It’s clear from speaking with Leah that sponsors aren’t just appreciated—they’re vital to the success of the show.

“We couldn’t hold the show without the huge support we get from the people and companies that kindly choose to sponsor The Raheendaw Horse & Pony Show.”

What stands out is the genuine enthusiasm and engagement from these businesses.

“Many of our sponsors are connected to the equine world in one way or another,” Leah explains. “We make every effort to ensure that their support is recognised and that we are actively promoting their activities.”

From Lennon Solicitors in Bagenalstown, who sponsor the working hunter fences, to tons of local and national businesses who have backed the show year after year—this is sponsorship that feels personal. It’s more than a logo. It’s an investment in the future of local sport.

What to Bring, Where to Go, How to Enjoy It All

If you’re new to Raheendaw—or just coming to spectate—come prepared for the outdoors.
“Pack everything but the kitchen sink,” Leah laughs. With a food van, coffee van, ice cream, and toilets all on site, everything is set for a proper day out.

The ring layout is spectator-friendly, and whether you want to park up at the Working Hunter fences or watch the fancy dress chaos unfold, there’s plenty to enjoy.

And for riders worried about gear?
“Don’t worry if you forget anything – Kate’s Tack Shop will be on site!”

Grassroots Effort Behind the Scenes

Here at the Grassroots Gazette, we want to say something Leah wouldn’t say herself—but absolutely deserves to be said. Behind this brilliant day is a committee of dedicated locals and a team of volunteers who put in months of work to make it happen. From ring stewards and admin teams to car parkers and clean-up crews, Raheendaw Horse and Pony Show is powered by community spirit and a team of incredible people.

We want to say thank you to Leah Burgess, who took the time to share the story, answer the questions, and get us prepped for this special feature.

It’s not easy keeping a rural show alive—let alone growing it. But this team is doing exactly that. Three years in and already making a mark. That deserves more than applause. It deserves support.

Sunday 1st June. Horses, dogs, coffee, competition, and local heart.
