Bluegrass Horse Feed launches groundbreaking new product Mare Prepare

Following extensive research and working closely with Kentucky Equine Research, Bluegrass Horse Feed have developed a brand-new product Mare Prepare.

Mare Prepare has been formulated specifically to support broodmares, including those with fertility issues and to meet the demands of producing healthy foals. It has been carefully designed with the scientific support of Kentucky Equine Research, it is a one-stop shop in broodmare nutrition when it comes to supporting optimal fertility, breeding performance and reproductive recovery.

The inclusion of Marine Derived Oil high in Omega Fatty Acids is what provides high levels of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) & EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) which benefits fertility and reproductive health. Research has shown that supplementation of pregnant mares with DHA and EPA results in better endometrial scores which are indicators of uterine health, compared with un-supplemented mares.

Supplementation of pregnant mares with DHA and EPA confers benefits as, mares effectively incorporate these fatty acids into their milk, so supplementation of the mare provides for the suckling foal. Broodmares on diets high in omega-3 fatty acids may produce richer colostrum. Studies have shown that foals of supplemented mares seemed to have a stronger immune system than foals suckling mares not fed omega-3 fatty acids. Other findings suggest that mares with a history of abortion may benefit from nutritional support with omega-3 fatty acids.

Kenneth Irwin M.D of Bluegrass Horse Feed explained “the inclusion of marine derived oil negates the need to feed additional supplements”, “Mare Prepare contains the recommended 60g per day, ensuring your mare receives the optimal level of DHA & EPA.”.

Stamm 30®, a premium balancer is fortified within Mare Prepare to provide high quality proteins, vitamins & minerals specifically formulated to meet the requirements of gestating and lactating mares. Prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics within Mare Prepare enhance the bioavailability of nutrients and improves fibre digestion promoting optimal gut health.

An elevated level of natural source of Vitamin E is incorporated within Mare Prepare, a vital antioxidant which protects tissues and cells from degradation. In addition, mares supplemented with Vitamin E demonstrate increased passive transfer of antibodies to foals. As the Vitamin-E included within this product is natural, it has 180% more bioavailability than other synthetic forms, meaning mares fed Mare Prepare won’t require additional supplementation.

Mare Prepare also contains Marine Derived Calcium, research shows it has three main benefits for our horse’s health; stabilises gut PH, improves gastrointestinal health and helps in preventing skeletal issues by improving bone density & strength. To further support optimal growth and sound development KER micronutrients are incorporated including chelated trace minerals & B-vitamins such as Biotin, Folic Acid & Selenium.

Kenneth Irwin spoke about the launch of this new innovative breeding cube, “We have worked hard with Kentucky Equine Research, leaders in equine nutrition, to develop a product that supports the broodmares long before breeding right through until the foal is on the ground. Mare Prepare has been formulated to support broodmares including those with fertility issues to meet demands of producing healthy foals. We have had some really positive feedback from customers trialling this product and are looking forward to hearing more after the product is launched.”

Feeding Guidelines

To achieve the full benefit of the recommended levels of DHA and EPA feed at 2.5kg per day for an average 500kg horse, in two feeds to barren mares 60 days prior to breeding to boost reproductive health.

Barren Mares: 2.5kg

1st trimester: 2.5kg

2nd trimester: 2.5-3kg

3rd trimester: 3-4kg

Lactation: 3-4.5kgs

Stallions: 2.5 – 3.5kgs

If you feel at any stage additional condition is required, increase the rate of feeding or add an additional calorie source such as Bluegrass Stud Mix, Stud Cubes, Turmash, Equi-Jewel or Flax-Plus.

Bluegrass have worked hard on the palatability of the feed but as with most feeds, it’s best to introduce it slowly over a week to 10 days.

A bag of Mare Prepare costs about £5 more per bag than other Bluegrass stud feeds, therefore four bags bag per month costs an extra £20. Money well spent when you consider no additional breeding supplements should be needed!

Bluegrass Mare Prepare is designed for:

  • Mares prior to breeding.
  • Gestating & lactating mares.
  • Mares with reduced fertility.
  • Barren mares.
  • Stallions.
