Who are you and what do you do? Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Chloe Kirwan, I am 27 years old. I am from Straffan, Co Kildare and I am a secondary school teacher in a local school. I am getting married in July ‘24 so between work, wedding organising and the horses, I am one busy lady!! However, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Favourite earliest memory on a horse or pony? (Photo of around time)

We always were fortunate enough to keep our ponies at home and I was in the saddle since I was only a tiny tot as both my parents rode.

It’s hard to pick one favourite memory as my childhood was a dream because of the ponies. From waking up on Christmas morning to a little pony downstairs, to cantering around the fields with my sisters whooping like Indians, to the legendary Kildare Pony Club camps in Punchestown, my first children’s hunt.

Why the equestrian life? It is a tough, unwavering, relentless, fun filled and loving life but WHY is this the life you want to live?

The equestrian life, to me, is not just a lifestyle; it’s a profound passion and a unique connection with these amazing animals. It’s about the bond you form with your horse, built on trust, respect, and communication.

Yes, it’s tough – the early mornings, the physical demands, the challenges in training and competition – but it’s in those challenges that we find growth and resilience.

It’s unwavering because no matter the setbacks, I keep coming back to the yard, driven by our love for them.

It’s relentless because there’s always more to learn, always ways to improve, and a constant pursuit of perfection in our riding.

And it’s fun-filled and loving because of the moments of pure joy, the sense of freedom when you ride, and the incredible friendships forged in the horse world.

This life may not be for everyone, but for those of us who choose it, it’s an inexplicable calling, a passion that runs deep in our veins. It’s not just what we do; it’s who we are, and that’s why I want to live this equestrian life!!

You were the wildcard that made it to the final 5 of Season 1. What a simply incredible achievement. How did it feel being in Sleighduff with Willow shooting a series over 1,000,000 people will see from all around the world?

Being the wildcard and making it to the final 5 of Season 1 of the Grassroots Riders Academy was an absolutely surreal and thrilling experience.

Being in Sleighduff with my horse, Willow, and knowing that our journey was being captured for a series that other people would see was both exciting and humbling. It was a mix of nerves and excitement, knowing that our story, our challenges, and our triumphs would be shared with such a vast audience.

But above all, it was an incredible opportunity to showcase the bond between Willow and I, to highlight the hard work and dedication that goes into this equestrian life as an amateur rider, and to inspire others who share our passion. I

You’ve told your story and you still push forward like with the Rider Academy. It is such a strong mindset to build… a never ending improvement but the best investment we can make. What is your best advice for people aspiring to be better that may deal with confidence issues?

My best advice for anyone aspiring to be better, especially if they’re dealing with confidence issues, is to embrace the journey of self-improvement with patience and self-compassion. Here are a few key tips:

1. Set Realistic Goals: Start with achievable, small goals that you can celebrate along the way. Each small victory builds confidence.

2. Positive Self-Talk: Pay attention to your inner dialogue. Replace self-doubt with positive affirmations. Challenge negative thoughts with evidence of your past achievements.

3. Visualise Success: Spend time visualising yourself succeeding in your pursuits. Visualisation can help boost confidence and reduce anxiety. Don’t visualise it going arse up, visualise it going how you want it to go!

4. Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to lean on your support network – whether it’s friends, family, instructors, or professionals. Talking about your goals and challenges can be incredibly empowering. I have an incredible support network around me and I couldn’t do it without them!

5. Learn from Setbacks: Understand that setbacks are a natural part of any journey. Instead of viewing them as failures, see them as opportunities to learn and grow.

6. Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you practise and gain competence, the more confident you’ll become and the better you and your horse will get.

7. Celebrate Progress: Recognise and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Each step forward is a step in the right direction. It may take months, even years but once it’s going in the right direction, be happy and take the small wins!

Remember that building confidence is an ongoing process. It’s about believing in yourself and your ability to grow. Keep pushing forward, stay committed to your goals, and know that with time and effort, your confidence will naturally strengthen.

You keep coming back and pushing through always, I can always see a quiet confidence, maybe even a refusal to give up or give in… I remember talking to you as you sat on Top of Willow after coming down from the XC work with Lucinda Fredericks? How did that make you feel? What level was your confidence and belief at then?

Sitting on my best friend, Willow, after a session with Lucinda Fredericks was truly a remarkable moment for me. Lucinda is an incredible coach, and her guidance was invaluable. At that point, my confidence and belief were at a high. I felt a quiet determination and a strong sense of purpose.

While the journey in equestrian sports can be challenging and filled with ups and downs, moments like that, where you’ve just had a great training session with a renowned coach, instill a profound sense of confidence. It’s a reminder that the hard work, dedication, and refusal to give up can lead to remarkable progress. It’s those moments that fuel the belief that with continuous effort and learning, we can achieve our goals, no matter how big or small.

About Willow, tell us in 3 sentences what Willow means to you Chloe?

Willow is my steadfast companion, my confidante, and my partner in adventure. She embodies trust and unwavering loyalty, making every ride an unforgettable journey. Willow isn’t just a horse; she’s my heart, my inspiration, my best friend and the embodiment of the incredible bond between rider and horse.

What makes Willow so special to you? Any unique traits does Willow have?

Willow is incredibly special to me because of her unique blend of talent and sass and kindness. She can be your typical moody mare but she will always give me her best and for that, I owe her the world. She always has my back. Her athleticism and ability to excel in various disciplines are amazing. Yet, it’s her sassy and spirited personality that makes every day with her an exciting and rewarding adventure. Willow isn’t just a horse; she’s a remarkable and unforgettable character in the story of my equestrian journey.

What has been your proudest moment of your journey with The Grassroots Rider Academy so far, and why is that moment so special to you?

My proudest moment at The Grassroots Rider Academy has been the day I was selected as one of the final five riders. It was a culmination of hard work, determination, and the belief that I could push past my limits. This moment is so special because it validated my commitment to the sport and gave me the opportunity to learn from world-class coaches and fellow riders who share my passion. It was a reminder that with dedication and perseverance, we can achieve our dreams.

How much has your mindset in yourself changed or grown in the last few months? Have you learned anything new about yourself or Willow?

To trust in Willow and myself more!! I’ve discovered even more about her unique personality and capabilities. Our bond has deepened, and I’ve learned to better understand her cues and preferences. It’s been a journey of mutual growth, where we’ve become more in sync as a team, and I’ve gained a greater appreciation for her talents and quirks.

Who do you want to be in life, what values will define you?

In life, I aspire to be someone who embodies values of resilience, empathy, fairness, kindness and loyalty.

Integrity, compassion, and a strong sense of responsibility towards others and the world around me are values that I hold dear. I aim to make a positive impact on the lives of those I love and contribute to creating a more inclusive and compassionate community. Where everyone is treated equally.

Ultimately, I want to be someone who lives a life true to my beliefs, values, and passions, and who inspires others to do the same.

What does the future hold? Manifest 3 things that will happen; Call them out loud and proud.

Next year 2024, my goals include:

  1. Event Willow 1* at an International
  2. Compete in Dublin in the TIH Working Hunter
  3. Move up to Elementary in dressage
