Passion, dedication, and community spirit are the driving forces behind the TRI Equestrian Grassroots Championship 2024. This event, taking place at Ballindenisk, Co Cork, from 13-14th July, is a testament to the enduring love and commitment that grassroots members bring to the sport of eventing.
A Platform for Rising Stars
The TRI Equestrian Grassroots Championship offers classes at EI80, EI90, and EI100, exclusively for grassroots members and those new to eventing. It’s a unique opportunity for riders to compete in their own championship format, fostering a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition. This year, we’re excited to introduce a new EI100 Open class, designed for athletes competing on horses that have previously performed at EI110 or higher with other riders.
Inclusivity at Its Best
Anyone aged 12 years or older can compete, whether they are full or web-only members. As Niki Potterton, Chairman of Eventing Ireland, aptly stated, “The Grassroots members make up over 55% of the total riding membership – we would not have a sport without them.”
A Partnership for Success
TRI Equestrian’s Managing Director Philip Masterson highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “As an Irish equestrian business, we are delighted to partner with Eventing Ireland. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission to promote and nurture eventing talent at the grassroots level. We look forward to contributing to the success of this Grassroots Championship.”
Niki Potterton echoed this sentiment, saying, “We are delighted to welcome TRI Equestrian onboard as the title sponsor of our Grassroots Championships. This is now in its second year, and we hope that with TRI’s support, it will be even bigger and better and continue to showcase our Grassroots athletes.”
Voices of Champions
Let’s hear from some of last year’s champions, who offer valuable insights and advice for this year’s competitors.
Emer Esler, EI80 Grassroots Champion 2023
- On the Championship Experience: “I really enjoyed my first experience at Eventing Ireland Grassroots championships. It was run very smoothly. The venue in Lisgarvan was fantastic; the ground was in perfect condition, and the cross-country course was great. It flowed nicely while also asking the horses some decent questions in combinations. It was a privilege to do the showjumping in the big ring, making the amateur rider feel like a professional for the day.”
- On the Championship Energy: “There was a good buzz around that day. Although it was raining during my dressage, the sun came out, and it turned into a beautiful sunny day. I didn’t feel any stress or rush throughout the day. The stewards were friendly and knowledgeable, which helped as you don’t feel pressured into the ring before you’re ready. There was a positive vibe from everyone, and the other riders were all nice and supportive.”
Claire O’Dwyer, EI100 Grassroots Champion 2023
- Advice for Competitors: “Preparation & fitness are key. Make sure you go into the event knowing you have done your work and that you and your horse are in peak fitness.”
- On the Importance of Grassroots Events: “Events like this make eventing inclusive for everyone. It’s important that grassroots riders get the opportunity to compete within their level at a big event. Last year’s Championship was a great event to take part in.”
